Welcome to Organic Underworld! Since you are here I'm going to assume that you have heard the buzz about this terrific all natural soil amendment called worm castings, also known as vermicast. I would like to spend a little time to inform you on some of the many benefits of using worm castings as a soil amendment.
First and foremost worm castings significantly increases plant growth as any good soil amendments should do. Extensive research on plant growth has been performed by U.C. Davis, Cornell University, Ohio state and other agriculture organizations to test the benefits of worm castings. Tests have shown significant yield increases as well as improvements in taste and appearance in fruits and vegetables. Flowers have been shown to have improved plant size, bloom quality, quantity and color when using worm castings. And the best part is these results were achieved with ALL-NATURAL worm castings!
Worm castings contain nematodes! There are good nematodes and bad nematodes. The bad nematodes are root eaters and the good nematodes are fungus eaters. Research has shown that worm castings only contain the good nematodes. This is beneficial because too much fungus in the mix causes nitrogen lock-up hampering plant growth. With the help of the fungus eating protozoa, also found in worm castings, nematodes create and maintain healthy nitrogen levels in the soil for your plants to flourish.
Worm castings act as an insect repellent. Many insects have exoskeletons made of chitin. Several microorganisms found in worm castings produce an enzyme called chitinase which dissolves chitin. Chitinase-producing organisms are also found in plants and are activated by worm castings. Insects are able to detect the level of chitinase in plants and soil. You can also make worm casting tea, sprayed on the foliage of your plants deters bugs, they don't like it, and at the same time foliar feeds the plant. The worm tea infiltrates the soil and also feeds the roots.
Believe it or not, but worm casting act as an odor neutralizer and despite the fact that worm castings is worm poop it has a pleasant earthy smell. If you have a compost pile containing manure or table scraps then I'm sure I don't have to tell you the smell can become quite pungent. All you need to do is mix in about 10 to 15 percent of worm castings and the offensive smell it gone!
These are just a few of the many benefits that come from using worm castings in your garden, lawn, flower beds, house plants, or any other place you have plants growing. I thank you for your time and interest and I hope you found this informative. Happy growing!
